environmental education. To our knowledge, however, few of them address issues of migration and forced displacement as a consequence of climate change, and particularly extreme weather events. In order to correct this oversight, we have created the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Teacher_Handout_EN.pdf\">Climate Migrant Suitcase Activity<\/a>.\u201d The goal of this interactive pedagogical activity\u2014which adheres to the Qu\u00e9bec Education Program (QEP) at the elementary and secondary levels\u2014is to provide teachers with the tools they need to address these climate issues in the classroom and to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration among school faculty.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The general objectives of this toolkit were established in accordance with three of the broad areas of learning in the QEP at the elementary level<sup>1<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Environmental Awareness and Consumer Rights and Responsibilities, Health and Well-Being, and Citizenship and Community Life. The activity\u2019s objectives are also in line with many elements of the Elementary <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Culture and Citizenship in Qu\u00e9bec Program<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CCQ), especially with regard to themes concerning Relationships Between Humans and the Environment<sup>2<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a component of Environmental Awareness, the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Teacher_Handout_EN.pdf\">Climate Migrant Suitcase Activity<\/a>\u201d will help elementary students develop the \u201cability to see, understand and take stock of the elements of their immediate environment\u201d and discover \u201cthat human beings and their environment are interdependent<sup>3<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d The activity will also allow each student to \u201cexpress their needs and emotions<sup>4<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d about the issues explored, a key objective of the Health and Well-Being area of learning. As part of their education on Citizenship and Community Life, students will also gain awareness of \u201cthe requirements of life in a group and understand the importance of adopting behaviour based on the democratic process<sup>5<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This toolkit is also founded upon the four types of Cross-Curricular Competencies<sup>6<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> put forth in the Qu\u00e9bec Education Program:<\/span><\/p><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intellectual competencies: to use information, to solve problems, to exercise critical judgment, to use creativity;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methodological competencies: to adopt effective work methods, to use information and communications technologies;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personal and social competencies: to construct their identity, to cooperate with others; and<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communication-related competency: to communicate appropriately.<\/span><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The activity also draws on other practical skills\u2014such as summarizing a story, describing fictional events, developing abstract thinking by comparing analogous situations, and making connections, for instance<sup>7<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Student_Handout_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Migrant Suitcase Activity<\/a>\u201d will help students to:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Develop their independence;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use information in new contexts;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exercise critical judgement;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Develop their sense of empathy; and<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acquire new information\/vocabulary to use outside the classroom.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the secondary level, this toolkit may be used as a pedagogical tool in four of the five subject areas recognized by the Minist\u00e8re de l\u2019\u00c9ducation: Languages, Science and Technology, Social Sciences, Arts Education, and Personal Development<sup>8<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
