data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>A &#8211; Climate Migration<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/en\/outil-denseignement-changements-climatiques-sante-et-migrations-deplacements-forces\/appendix-1\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human-driven (anthropogenic) climate change<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affects weather conditions, increasing the frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme weather events (heatwaves, storms, floods, droughts\u2026). According to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Internal Displacement Monitoring Center<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, over 20 million people worldwide were forced to relocate as a result of storms, floods, droughts, and wildfires in 2023, though even this seems mild compared to the 31 million <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/en\/toolkit\/appendix-1\/\">internal displacements<\/a><\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of this kind that occurred in 2022<sup>1<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Forest fires in western Canada and northern Qu\u00e9bec forced almost 185,000 people out of their homes in 2023<sup>2<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for instance. In 2024, the remnants of hurricane Debby brought torrential rains to southern Qu\u00e9bec, leading many to evacuate and causing serious damage to homes and infrastructure in the area.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d25c5c2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"d25c5c2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1951\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/neighbours_rescued_boatFR.png\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-1603\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/neighbours_rescued_boatFR.png 1951w, https:\/\/climigrant.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/neighbours_rescued_boatFR-300x92.png 300w, https:\/\/climigrant.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/neighbours_rescued_boatFR-1024x315.png 1024w, https:\/\/climigrant.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/neighbours_rescued_boatFR-768x236.png 768w, https:\/\/climigrant.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/neighbours_rescued_boatFR-1536x472.png 1536w, https:\/\/climigrant.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/neighbours_rescued_boatFR-600x185.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1951px) 100vw, 1951px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5900d40 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5900d40\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some places\u2014like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/en\/stories\/kiribati\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kiribati<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where water levels are rising and submerging coastlines\u2014climate change is a direct cause of migration. Most of the time, however, its effects are felt indirectly. Climate change is but one of many factors (such as political, social, and economic pressures)<sup>3<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that lead people to migrate, which makes it difficult to identify those who could be described specifically as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/en\/toolkit\/appendix-1\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climate migrants<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. To this day, climate migrants are not officially or legally recognized as such, making it difficult for them to move around internationally<sup>4<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Though climate-induced and environmental displacement have always been a part of historical human migration patterns<sup>5<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is not yet a precise legal definition or status for \u201cclimate migrants.\u201d Those who are forced to leave their home as a result of climate change are thus without status and must apply for immigration to a foreign country within another legal category (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/en\/toolkit\/appendix-1\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refugee<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/en\/toolkit\/appendix-1\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asylum seeker<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/en\/toolkit\/appendix-1\/\">temporary worker<\/a><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, etc.). More and more people believe that those who choose to leave their home as a result of climate change deserve access to safe and regular pathways to do so<sup>6<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Other options, such as allowing those who do not wish to or cannot leave (due to a disability or low income) to stay where they are, should also be considered<sup>7<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to note that most climate migration occurs <\/span><b>within the borders of a single state<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/en\/stories\/west-island\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">see the illustrated story about flooding in the West Island of Montr\u00e9al<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, for example). It is, however, expected that transnational migration will increase, particularly for populations in border-adjacent or conflict-prone regions<sup>8<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, both of which heighten one\u2019s risk of displacement. Finally, we should underline that countries most affected by climate migration are the developing nations of the Global South that have historically contributed the least to global warming. This is an issue for what is now called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/en\/toolkit\/appendix-1\/\">climate justice<\/a><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8464580 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8464580\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>B &#8211; The effects of climate change (and migration) on human health<\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate change is one of the greatest threats to population health. In 2022, Health Canada published an (872-page!) report on the health effects of climate change\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/changingclimate.ca\/health-in-a-changing-climate\/fr\/chapter\/1-0\/1-3\/figure_1-3_v8\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an accessible overview is available here<sup>9<\/sup><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Beyond direct impacts on their physical health, many people who experience extreme weather events may develop mental health issues, including depression and\/or post-traumatic stress<sup>10<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, we must remember that people who are forced to leave their home and migrate, even temporarily or provisionally, may face circumstances that expose them to mental and physical health risks. The conditions they face while travelling as well as at their point of arrival may be difficult: restricted access to healthcare and social services; restricted or insufficient means of subsistence (water, food); (physical or psychological) trauma as a result of dangerous or forced displacement, and many others<sup>11<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These vulnerabilities are worsened by the stigma and discrimination faced (especially, but not exclusively) by international migrants,as is explained in<a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/en\/toolkit\/iii\/\"> Section III<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Learn more<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-142 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/classroom.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" \/><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our interactive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/en\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climigrant<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> project aims to provide educational resources and raise awareness regarding climate change, climate migration, and health. With this in mind, the main objective of the project is to promote solidarity and acceptance towards migrants. The website features various creative resources, including illustrated stories (in English and in French) about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/en\/stories\/west-island\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flooding in the West Island of Montr\u00e9al<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/en\/stories\/kiribati\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rising water levels in Kiribati<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/en\/stories\/dominique-caraibes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the effects of Hurricane Maria in Dominica<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These stories explore the basic social, ethical, legal, and health ramifications of climate migration, underlining the complexity of the issue and the interdisciplinary and holistic perspectives we must adopt to understand it. We have also recorded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/balados\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two podcasts (in French) about climate migration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, more specifically regarding migrants in vulnerable situations and the services available to them.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, we also offer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climigrant.org\/formation\/en\/courses\/module-access\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an interdisciplinary online course<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for those who would like to learn more about key concepts relating to climate change, climate migration, and their health impacts. The course was designed primarily for researchers, students, decision-makers, service workers, clinicians, nurses, and healthcare practitioners as well as other concerned parties, but is accessible to all those interested. All course contents are available for free, and registration is fast and easy.
